Chandag Junior School Girls Swim Team travelled to Sheffield to compete in the English Schools Swimming Association, Primary Schools National Relay Finals held at Ponds Forge. With a minibus full of parents and supporters the girls were keen to do well and improve on their qualifying times achieved at Millfield in the South West Regional Qualifiers.
Only 2 teams went through for each event from the South West, Chandag managed to qualify for both the freestyle relay and the mixed stroke relay. At the finals in Sheffield, 24 teams from the 12 regions competed, with the top 16 from the heats going through to the A and B finals.
In the freestyle relay Jasmin Hennessy swam first and recorded an excellent time of 15.12, Ella Goodland swam second beating her personal best in a time of 17.93, Freya Money swam third, also achieving a PB of 17.03 and Sophie Hay swam a storming final leg in a remarkable time of 14.67. The team’s time of 1.04.75 qualified them for the B final in 15th place. In the B final Chandag came 7th which kept them in 15th place overall.
In the mixed stroke relay Amy Dixon swam the backcrawl leg in an excellent time of 20.08, Jasmin Hennessy swam the breaststroke leg in an amazing time of 19.96, Freya Money swam a PB of 18.91 for the butterfly leg and Sophie Hay improved her 25m freestyle time with a 14.58 leg. Chandag came second in their heat and got through to the B final. In the B final Chandag came 3rd and 11th overall.
This was an excellent achievement for the Chandag Girl’s, coming 11th and 15th in England. However what is more remarkable is that Chandag finished as the top state school in the mixed stroke relay and 2nd state school in the freestyle relay event in the whole of England!
